 JOB DUTIES
The Main Pump Station operates on a seven-day, twenty-four hour basis irrespective of holidays.  The Wastewater Pump Station Operator has control room operation responsibility maintaining hourly, weekly and teleprinter logs; answers and records telephone calls and complaints; operates bar screens, shredder and sluice gates as required; checks heat generators temperature and pressure; must be familiar with all aspects of pump station operations including inspection of the boiler room equipment, pumps and motors and the motor control center.
Checks and inspects sewage pumps for proper operations; checks gauges, relief valves, solenoids, ball valves and butterfly valves for proper operation.
Checks heat recovery units for proper functioning with inspection of belts, filters and louver linkages and motor operations; checks stand-by generator and performs routine maintenance; during power failure he will be required, as a control room operator, to switch pump operation to this stand-by unit.
Assist Maintenance Man in any maintenance work as directed by supervisor.
May have to work on grit removal, grass cutting, snow removal and landscaping as needed.
 DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility during an assigned shift for the efficient operation and maintenance of electric pumps at a water treatment plan wastewater pump station or booster station.  The work is to be performed in accordance with established procedures, concerning pumps to be used and the pressure to be maintained.  General assignments are received supervising employee of higher rank; does related work as required.
 TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Starts and stops pumps in accordance with an established schedule of operations;
Periodically records reading of pressure gauges and storage water level meters and maintains a station log;
Oils and greases motors and pumps;
Cleans and paints pumps and motors;
Checks temperature of motor and pump bearings and water seals;
Performs a variety of mechanical maintenance and custodial tasks.
 Water Treatment Plant
Operates and service auxiliary motors and equipment;
Assists the Water Treatment Plant Operator when requested;
Assists in dismantling and reassembling motors and pumps when repairs are indicated;
Refers telephoned complaints of low pressure to supervisor;
Opens, closes and adjust valves;
Reports unusual occurrences and emergency situations to a superior.
 Booster Stations
Travels a circuit of booster stations to assure proper operation of pumps and motors which may be manually or remotely controlled.
 Wastewater Pump Station
Checks and inspects sewage pumps for proper operations;
Checks all gauges, seal water unit, relieve valves and lubricate bearings and related equipment;
Checks sump pump for proper operation;
Checks solenoids, ball valves and butterfly valves for operating condition;
Maintains pump room in good housekeeping;
Performs various operation and maintenance duties in the following areas:  control room, wet well, boiler room, motor room, electric room, penthouse;
Inspects and maintains stand-by generator;
Assists in grounds keeping activities, including grass cutting, snow removal and maintaining groundskeeping mechanical equipment;
May do minimal water testing as directed by supervisor.
 FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the operation, maintenance and minor repair of pumps and motors and high voltage switchgear; good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of water measurement devices; knowledge of the safety precautions to be exercised in connection with electric pump operations; ability to make repairs to mechanical equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read, interpret and record gauges and meters used in regulating pumps; mechanical aptitude; alertness; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience in the operation and maintenance of electric pumps and auxiliary equipment; OR
  2. Completion of elementary school and three (3) years of experience as indicated in (a); OR
  3. An equivalent combination or training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
 SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Eligibility for New York State Driver’s license at time of application; possession of license at time of appointment.
 
NOTE:  Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
